In response to the growing interest from our global colleagues, we have developed four specialized Sustainability Modules: 

Each module is designed to provide in-depth insights into our innovative approaches and practical solutions. These half-day programs combine: 

  1. Informative presentations on key sustainability topics.
  2. Guided site visits across our campus, offering a firsthand look at how sustainability is integrated into hospital operations, patient care, and community engagement. 
  3. Interactive Q&A sessions to address your specific questions and challenges.

These are the four Sustainability Modules:

Green and Sustainable Hospital Module

  • Overview of Karolinska’s sustainability initiatives and achievements.
  • Smart, green, and energy-efficient building design: Including green roofs, environmentally friendly building materials, and certified sustainable construction.
  • Green care unit: Implementing sustainable practices in patient care.
    Karolinska’s comprehensive sustainability program, encompassing environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
  • Case studies of successful projects and best practices.
  • Organizational structure and framework supporting Karolinska’s sustainability efforts.

Social Sustainability Module

  • Overview of Karolinska’s social sustainability initiatives and achievements.
  • Efforts to counteract discrimination against patients, families, and employees.
  • Key areas of social sustainability: Human rights, gender equality, equity in public health, patient participation, and engagement.
  • Promoting evidence-based healthcare: Supporting practices that are free from harm, truly necessary, and aligned with the principle of "Choosing Wisely."
  • Stakeholders and networks supporting Karolinska’s social sustainability work.
  • Case studies of successful projects and best practices.

Environmental and Economic Sustainability Module

  • Overview of Karolinska’s environmental and economic sustainability initiatives.
  • Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, with a focus on consumption-based emissions (Scope 3).
  • Key areas of environmental work: Waste management, chemical management, pharmaceutical products, and energy efficiency.

Management, Cooperation, Monitoring and Evaluation Module

  • Compliance with obligations and regulations from the Stockholm Region and other external stakeholders.
