Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita

Common to all children with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita is that very early treatment of the joint contractures will improve joint mobility and function.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a group of conditions that result in non-progressive congenital joint contractures in two or more parts of the body.

One third have amyoplasia with lack of musculature of only legs and/or arms, one third have distal arthrogryposis due to mutations of different muscle proteins and one third of children with AMC have other genetic disorders. Common to all these children is that very early treatment of the joint contractures will improve joint mobility and function.

The Stockholm AMC Team with pediatric neurologist, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, hand surgeon, geneticist, physiotherapists and occupational therapists from Karolinska and Habilitation centers, orthotist, and coordinator/nurse are engaged very early from the delivery wards, and will then follow the child till their 18th birthday.

Serial casting for treatment of joint contractures may start already the first day of life and is a common reoccurring treatment during growth. Later bent joints/contractures may be treated by guided growth of growth plates using screws or two-hole plates over the growth zones of the bone. Hip dislocations may be treated with more extensive osteotomies of the pelvis and femur. For planning of surgeries and orthotic devices, we use Gait Analysis and advanced musculoskeletal imaging (3D CT, MRI). The upper limb is evaluated with standardized videos during activity for planning of surgeries.
