Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophies such as muscular atrophy, polyneuropathies, and myopathies

Children with genetic muscular diseases such as Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy and Spinal Muscle Atrophy (SMA) are followed by the Stockholm Pediatric Muscle Team, comprising dedicated pediatric neurologists, pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, orthotists, occupational therapists and nurse/coordinator.

The children are treated with state-of-the-art medications for improved muscle function. Orthotics are used for stabilization of joints for optimal use of weak muscles.

Orthopedic surgery may be warranted for scoliosis, contractures, and limb malformations that follow long standing extensive muscle weakness. Guided growth with temporary screws over the growth plate may be used to keep hips contained and knees straight.
