The Herbert Olivecrona Award 2024
Information
About the event
Professor Herbert Olivecrona was a Professor of Neurosurgery at Karolinska Institutet from 1935 to 1960. On a regular basis since 1976 the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery, Karolinska University Hospital, honours an international neurosurgeon for his/her contributions to brain or spinal cord surgery and/or research with the Olivecrona medal.
This year's Olivecrona medallist, Professor Walter Stummer, is the Head of Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital in Münster and professor at the University of Münster, Germany. He is awarded the prize for his research and development of fluorescence guided brain surgery with 5-ALA.
"Fluorescence-guided surgery enables us to see tumours that we cannot see in the normal light of the microscope. It enables maximum resection of the tumour, which is crucial for the patient's survival," says Margret Jensdottir, Senior Neurosurgeon Consultant at the medical unit of Neurosurgery, Karolinska University Hospital.
The topic of this year’s symposium is neuro-oncology with focus on surgery for malignant brain tumours and will be held in the Sune Bergström Auditorium at Karolinska University Hospital from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
