Helsinki University Hospital Joins 10 leading University Hospital in EUHA
After the announcement "HUS Helsinki University Hospital Joins the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA), Expanding Membership to 11 Leading Institutions." from the European University Hospital Alliance, Karolinska University Hospital wants to welcome our fellow nordic university hospital HUS Helsinki University Hospital to the alliance.
HUS joins an alliance of prestigious institutions, which has long been at the forefront of medical innovation and research-driven care. The addition of HUS strengthens EUHA’s shared ambition to harness cutting-edge advancements to improve healthcare outcomes across Europe.
That EUHA is growing to include yet another leading university hospital such as HUS, is a testimony that the alliance is becoming an important stakeholder and voice in the healthcare sector.
"We are very much looking forward having HUS with us, adding another perspective as well as strenghtenning the nordic participation in EUHA", says Anna Sahlström, Steering Committee member in EUHA and Head of National and International Affairs and Head of Innovation at Karolinska University Hospital.
Learning From Each Other
In 2023, members from EUHA did a study visit to HUS to gain insights from Finland’s recent Health and Social Care Reform. It was a part of EUHAs ongoing effort to explore innovative ways of sustainable health care.
"The visit helped us to learn about the details and impact of this reform that was aimed to streamline funding streams into the healthcare system, enhancing national control over governance, stewardship, and budgeting, while simultaneously addressing disparities in access to care. With Europe facing the same challenges it is more important than ever that we learn from each other and find solutions together", says Anna Sahlström.

Leading the Way Forward
HUS membership marks a significant milestone and a new chapter for EUHA, reinforcing the commitment to positioning university hospitals as key players in the healthcare system, with demonstrated expertise in healthcare, research, education, and—importantly—innovation.
“We at HUS Helsinki University Hospital are extremely happy about the invitation to join EUHA. This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with other European high-level university hospitals. We are looking forward to EUHA membership to bring us possibilities to extensive and high-level collaboration, benchmarking, and potentially building up new treatments and medications with other best European university hospitals”, says Matti Bergendahl, Chief Executive Officer at HUS Helsinki University Hospital.
