Karolinska University Hospital Named the First Center of Excellence in Mycology in the Nordics
Various fungal infections are responsible for around 3.8 million deaths globally each year, highlighting the urgent need for advancements in mycology. The European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) works to bring together clinicians and researchers interested in medical mycology. The designation of Centers of Excellence is part of their initiative to strengthen and advance progress in this field. Currently, there are only 15 Centers of Excellence worldwide, with Karolinska University Hospital now being the first in the Nordics.
"This recognition demonstrates that we are at the forefront of mycology. It provides us with access to a unique international network of experts, offering significant opportunities for improving diagnostics, treatment, and fostering research and development," says Volkan Özenci, Adjunct Professor and Senior Consultant at Clinical Microbiology, Medical Diagnostics Karolinska.
The prestigious recognition of becoming a Center of Excellence also opens up the possibility of participating in more studies and mobilizing additional resources from key funding partners.
Extensive Review Process
The application was submitted in the spring of 2023. After an initial review, both units were visited by an expert committee from ECMM. Over two days, the units underwent thorough inspections based on strict quality criteria. In August, the results were announced: the ECMM board has named Karolinska University Hospital as the first Center of Excellence in the Nordics.
"We have also been awarded the highest status, Diamond Status, which we are very proud of. This is a recognition of our high-quality research and specialized expertise in diagnosing and treating invasive fungal infections," says Volkan Özenci.
The designation is initially for a four-year period. Diamond Status imposes extra stringent requirements, including adherence to all ECMM guidelines, to contribute to improved patient care and research from a global perspective.
"Invasive fungal diseases are often complex to investigate and can be life-threatening in acute cases. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis, along with access to effective treatment options, is critical. Through the Excellence Center network, new opportunities arise for sharing knowledge and exchanging experiences on an international level," says Ola Blennow, Associate Professor and Senior Consultant at the Infectious Diseases Unit at Karolinska University Hospital.
